Carlos Basualdo

The Society for Contemporary Art at The Art Institute of Chicago proudly presents CARLOS BASUALDO Thursday, March 1, 2001, at 5:30 pm. The Wexner Center for the Arts at Ohio State University has a national reputation for innovative, multidisciplinary programming. Now, internationally renowned curator and critic Carlos Basualdo has accepted an appointment as the Wexner?s new chief curator of exhibitions. On Thursday March 1 the Society for Contemporary Art will welcome Basualdo for a reception and dinner. Mr. Basualdo will speak on his own curatorial practice and his plans for the Wexner Center in the year to come. A native of Rosario, Argentina, Mr. Basualdo has lived in the United States for seven years. He is the co-organizer of Documenta 11, to be held in Kassel, Germany, in 2002. In the recent past, Basualdo has curated exhibitions in S?o Paulo, Bogot?, Caracas, Ljubljana, Madrid, Guadalajara, Buenos Aires, Rome, Madrid, Chicago, New York, and other cities. As curator or co-curator, his exhibitions have has featured the work of Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Cindy Sherman, Tunga, Steve McQueen, and H?lio Oiticica. Group exhibits have included Worthless (Invaluable): The Concept of Value in Contemporary Art; Painting O Degree, featuring Daniel Buren, Robert Ryman, Niele Toroni and others; and The Education of the Five Senses, which showcased such ?sensory? artists as Ernesto Neto. He has served on juries for the Hugo Boss Prize at the Guggenheim Museum, the Central Art Prize in Cologne, and the International Studio Program at New York?s P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center. As a critic and essayist, Basualdo is a frequent contributor to Artforum and ArtNexus. He has written for Esquire, Flash Art, and The Art Newspaper, among other international contemporary art journals. A contributor to many exhibition catalogues, and Senior Editor of TRANS>arts, cultures, media, in New York from 1995-1998, Basualdo has also published two books of poetry.
