Surrealism and Its Consequences in Chicago

Dennis Adrian

The Art Institute is exhibiting 162 paintings, drawings and sculptures from the extraordinary Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Randall Shapiro Collection. Their collection contains many important works by 20th-century artists and is particularly outstanding for its concentration on masters of surrealism. The Shapiro Collection is internationally known and has had an important role in stimulating artistic developments in Chicago. Dennis Adrian, art historian and critic, will speak on “Surrealism and Its Consequences in Chicago.” Mr. Adrian, who wrote one of the essays for the catalogue of the Collection, will talk about surrealism in conjunction with the major examples in the Shapiro Collection and will discuss the collection’s stimulation of other artistic developments in Chicago.
