The Society for Contemporary Art at the Art Institute of Chicago cordially invites you to a New Members? Event to meet the Board and discuss the activities of our group. Please join us for cocktails: Thursday, September 9, 2004 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the home of Lewis and Susan Manilow Lewis and Susan Manilow are two of Chicago?s leading art collectors and cultural philanthropists. Lew has been a Trustee of the Art Institute for nineteen years, has acted as Chair and President of the Sustaining Fellows, and is a founding member and past President of the Museum of Contemporary Art. He is also Honorary President of the Goodman Theater, and is largely responsible for the revitalization of the North Loop Theatre district. In 2000, he received the National Medal of Arts in recognition of his long and effective support of the arts. Susan is past Chair of Mount Sinai Hospital and Medical Center, and has served the Chicago Board of Health, the Chicago Health Policy Research Council, the Environmental Defense Fund, and the National Park Foundation in key advisory roles. Together?since the 1970?s?the Manilows have amassed a stunning collection of contemporary art. It includes works by major artists such as Anselm Kiefer, Kara Walker, Julian Schnabel, and Gerhard Richter but concentrates on the work by emerging artists. In addition, they have an exceptional collection of antiquities. Since the Manilows will be moving this fall, this will be one of the last private events at their home, which was designed in the early ?90s by architects Max Gordon and John Vinci. The Manilows will give a brief presentation, touching upon the highlights of their thirty-five years of collecting. This promises to be an exciting event and a great way to meet members of the Society for Contemporary Art. We hope you will join us.
