The subject of the meeting of The Society for Contemporary Art of The Art Institute of Chicago will be the work of artist Chuck Close, which is currently on exhibit in the Photography Galleries. An informal dialogue will take place in the gallery between Lisa Lyons, Director of Acquisitions of the Museum Fund in Minneapolis, and Colin Westerbeck, the Assistant Curator of Photography at The Art Institute. Both speakers are intimately acquainted with Mr. Close’s work. Lisa Lyons, prior to becoming acquisition director of the Museum Fund, was a curator at The Walker Art Center and organized Close’s first one-man retrospective and the accompanying catalogue for the show titled “Close Portraits”, which then traveled to the Whitney. This spring, Ms. Lyons will move to Los Angeles and assume the position of Director of The Lannan Foundation, and art collecting organization. Colin Westerbeck, an Assistant Curator since the Fall of 1987, created the catalogue for Close’s exhibition at The Art Institute. Previously, Mr. Westerbeck taught at The School of The Art Institute and was an art writer for Chicago magazine. Prior to coming to Chicago, he was an art writer in New York for magazines such as ArtForum.
