Mark Tribe

The Society for Contemporary Art is proud to present MARK TRIBE Tuesday, October 17, 2000. “Multiplicities are rhizomatic, and expose arborescent pseudomultiplicities for what they are.” from A Thousand Plateaus: Capitalism and Schizophrenia by Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari. Rhizomes are horizontal roots that connect plants together in a living network. New York-based is a non-profit organization that presents, preserves and interprets new media, making digital connections in an internet community of artists. offers its members email discussion groups and a web-based archive of net art and events. Their text library contains over 1500 articles submitted by members of their community and their preservation archive links 71 net artworks. Much as photography reflected changes spurred by the Industrial Revolution, net art reflects the transformations of today’s Information Revolution. As cross-media artist G.H. Hovagimyan avers: “I find that Rhizome is the only forum that accurately represents the new global environment that every print and media source pays lip service to. Various epochs spawn social gathering places where people meet and exchange ideas. In the 1990’s Rhizome functions as such a zone.” For the past four years, Rhizome has been the online nexus for this global community. Rhizome boasts over 4000 subscribers in 75 countries; while approximately 30% of their members are from the U.S., the opportunities for international communication and cross-fertilization are unprecedented. The website gets over 8000 hits each month from artists, curators, writers, students, educators and new media professionals. David Ross, Director of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, has said: “Rhizome is a nearly perfect vehicle for the generation and communication of a significant and useful discourse on the web. Its importance as a model, and as an actual working structure, cannot be overstated.” Join us to learn more in The Trustees’ Room of the Art Institute of Chicago with a state-of-the-art demonstration and a lively exegesis by Mark Tribe, Founder, Executive Director, and dynamo behind
