Mary Heilmann

Mary Heilmann is an exquisite painter of brightly colored, loosely geometric abstraction in the tradition of grandiloquent New York School painting. Critic Mark Harris writes: ?This work looks as though it has always been out of fashion?yet Heilmann is New York?s canonized abstract painter, hip but always enough of an outsider to survive trends. Her culture goes deep into the mythology of alternative Americana: sex, drugs, Beat poets and surfers followed by sex, drugs, Post-Minimalists (hanging out with Bruce Nauman and Gordon Matta Clark), David Bowie, New York Dolls; then, abstinence and the East Village (showing with Pat Hearn) and, finally, old master status, influencing the likes of Moira Dryer and Jessica Stockholder, with students like Laura Owens and Monique Prieto. All the time painting these unfashionably gaudy canvases.? Mary Heilmann?s work was included in the Whitney Biennial in 1989. Recent exhibitions include ?All Tomorrow’s Parties? at the Secession in Vienna, Austria (2003). A major traveling retrospective of Mary Heilmann’s career is being organized by the Orange County Museum of Art, Newport Beach, California (2007) and the New Museum, New York (2008). Heilmann will discuss her most recent projects in a performance-based presentation involving a slide show accompanied by recorded music.
