New Member Event

Nick Cave is a Chicago-based multimedia and performance artist, fashion designer, and the Chair of the Department of Fashion Design at the School of the Art Institute. His residence, which he shares with his partner, architect Jeffery Roberts is located on Automobile Row, an architecturally significant, historic South Loop district. Personally designed and updated by Roberts, their remarkable home showcases Cave’s collection of found and contemporary art masterfully arranged among his own work and dramatic interior landscaping. Cave’s current projects include a collaborative performance with the Alvin Alley American Dance Theater as part of their 50th Anniversary celebration and a fall fashion spread of his Soundsuits for CITY Magazine. Reminiscent of African ceremonial costumes, yet similarly connected to haute couture, his Soundsuits are sculpted, full-body garments constructed from found and recycled objects, thrift-store purchases, and hand-fabricated elements and comprised of materials such as vintage masks, beads, plastic flowers, cloth, and sticks that are intuitively combined to form complex and highly seductive visual surfaces and sounds. The Chicago Cultural Center held a solo exhibition of Cave’s work in 2006. We hope you can join us for what promises to be an enjoyable evening. This event is only for new members. There is no charge for this event. The Society for Contemporary Art would like to acknowledge our partnership with Sotheby’s for this and upcoming events
