Rem Koolhaus and Helmut Jahn

The Society for Contemporary Art invites you to a behind the scenes tour of two exciting, new architectural complexes at IIT McCormick Tribute Campus Center designed by Rem Koolhaas State Street Village Residences designed by Helmut Jahn Tuesday, 14 October 2003 Donna Robertson, Dean of the College of Architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology, will lead Society members on a walking tour of IIT?s renewed Main Campus. In addition to a guided tour of the recently completed campus center and residences, Dean Robertson will speak about The Richard H. Driehaus Foundation International Design Competition, focusing on the challenges faced by the applicants to express the architecture of our time while complementing master modernist Mies van der Rohe?s campus, one of the most important statements in 20th century architecture. The campus center designed by Pritzker Prize-winning, Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas of OMA?selected from a group of five finalists (Peter Eisenman, Zaha Hadid, Helmut Jahn/Werner Sobek, Kazuyo Sejima/Ryue Nishizawa)?is the first Koolhaas building in the United States and has already received significant international attention. It uses diagonal pathways, which are extensions of the paths students use to cross the campus, to spatially divide the various functions of the building. The design?s predominant feature is a concrete and stainless steel tube that encloses a 530-foot stretch of the Green Line Elevated railroad tracks, passing directly over the one-story campus center building. The tube will dampen the sound of trains passing overhead as visitors enjoy the new facility. The innovative design by Helmut Jahn of Murphy Jahn sets a new standard for student residence halls. Situated across the street from the campus center, the State Street Village Residences also address the challenges posed by the adjacent elevated tracks, joining three separate five-story buildings by exterior glass walls that will muffle noise from passing trains. Please join us for what promises to be an exciting look at IIT?s new campus, only two weeks after the inauguration of Rem Koolhaas? McCormick Tribune Campus Center.
