SCA Detroit Trip

The Society for Contemporary Art is organizing a study trip to Detroit from April 21-23, 2006. We are creating an engaging itinerary that will focus on contemporary art and architecture. To experience the most within a limited time, the schedule will be comprehensively planned to include full days of the following sights and activities: Cranbrook Campus?comprised of the Academy of Art, the Art Museum, Cranbrook Schools, and the Institute of Science?featuring buildings designed by world-renowned architects Eliel Saarinen, Albert Kahn, Rafeal Moneo, Steven Holl, Tod Williams and Billie Tsien. We will tour Saarinen House, the home and studio designed by Eliel Saarinen, and visit graduate studios where artists-in-residence mentor students in art, architecture and design. Saturday night we will attend the opening of the Graduate Degree Exhibition, the graduating student thesis show. Highlights of downtown Detroit, including Mies van der Rohe?s Lafayette Park housing, deemed ?one of America’s most successful post-World War II urban redevelopment projects,? and the Detroit Industry fresco cycle by Diego Rivera at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Private collection visits including The Gilbert and Lila Silverman Fluxus Collection (the most extensive Fluxus collection in the world), the Silverman?s private collection, Maxine and Stuart Frankel?s collection of contemporary art, Marc Schwartz?s collection of contemporary drawings, and SCA member Burt Aaron?s collection of contemporary art Frank Lloyd Wright?s Melvin Maxwell Smith House We will stay at The Townsend Hotel (www.townsendhotel.com). The anticipated cost for a two-night stay, all meals, museum admission and transportation, inclusive of airfare (American Airlines), will be: Single (with own room) $1,100.00 (per person) Single (sharing a room)** $ 850.00 (per person) Double (sharing a room) $1,700.00 (per couple) **If you intend on sharing a room, please make your own arrangements and inform the administrator. The SCA will not be responsible for pairing roommates. A non-refundable deposit of $300.00 per person is due by March 5th. The balance will be due March 20th. Please make a check payable to the Society for Contemporary Art and mail it to the SCA office with the enclosed card. Unfortunately, we do not accept credit cards.
