Sean Scully

The next meeting of the Society for Contemporary Art will be the first in a series of four meetings devoted to the work of young artists from which we will make a selection at the Annual Meeting in May as a gift to The Art Institute. The first of these young artists will be Sean Scully on his own work. Sean Scully was born in Dublin, Ireland and grew up in London. He was educated in England and the United States and moved here permanently in 1975 when he was 30 years of age. He taught at Princeton University from 1977-83 and now lives in New York City. In 1983, Scully received a Guggenheim Fellowship and in 1984 he received a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. He has been the subject of numerous articles and reviews and his work is included in the collections of the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, The Victoria and Albert Museum in London, The Saatchi Collection, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and many others. Scully’s work is featured in a current exhibition of the Department of 20th Century Painting and Sculpture of The Art Institute. His work will be included in those presented to the Society for possible acquisition in May.
