Thelma Golden

Please join the Society for Contemporary Art of the Art Institute of Chicago and The Executive Committee of the Collectors Forum of the Museum of Contemporary Art in welcoming Thelma Golden, Deputy Director for Exhibitions and Programs of The Studio Museum in Harlem. Prior to her appointment at The Studio Museum in Harlem in January 2000, perhaps what brought Thelma Golden to national attention was her role at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City, where she curated the controversial exhibition called “Black Male: Representations of Masculinity in Contemporary American Art.” At the Whitney, she was Curator and Director of Branch Museums from 1996-1999; Associate Curator from 1993-1996; and Director and Exhibition Coordinator, Whitney Museum at Philip Morris from 1991-1993. She began her career at the Whitney in 1988 as Curatorial Assistant. Between the Whitney and the Studio Museum, Golden was the Special Projects Curator for Peter and Eileen Norton, contemporary art collectors and philanthropists based in Los Angeles, California. Golden most recently curated the upcoming Gary Simmons exhibition that is co-organized by The Studio Museum and the MCA which will open February 16. She has also written about and curated exhibitions for many other artists including Glen Ligon, Carrie Mae Weems, and Kara Walker. In addition to her curatorial work, Golden teaches, lectures, and writes about contemporary art, cultural issues, and curatorial practice nationally and internationally. She is an adjunct professor at the School of the Arts at Columbia University and has been a member of the faculty at Yale University and Cornell University. She is a member of the Graduate Committee at the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College. Ms. Thelma Golden received a B.A. in Art History and African American Studies in 1987 from Smith College, Northampton, MA.
