William S. Lieberman

Our guest speaker for the opening meeting will be William S. Lieberman, Chairman of Twentieth Century Art at The Metropolitan Museum in New York City. In 1945 Mr. Lieberman joined the Museum of Modern Art to become assistant to the Director, Alfred H. Barr, Jr. During his thirty-five year association with the Modern he established and defined the curatorial departments of Prints and Drawings and built their respective collections. He was appointed curator and then director of the Museum’s Departments of Painting and Sculpture. Among the numerous exhibitions which he conceived and installed was the Modern’s 50th Anniversary Exhibition: Art of the Twenties. In January, 1980, Mr. Lieberman joined the staff of The Metropolitan. His topic for the evening will be “The Growth of a Modern Collection: The 20th Century at The Metropolitan Museum of Art” – in which he will chronicle the collections and gifts of each decade.
