Join the SCA, Guy-Karim Caland Puymartin, and Janine Mileaf, Executive Director and Chief Curator of The Arts Club of Chicago, for a curator-led tour of Huguette Caland: Bribes de Corps. Curated by Hannah Feldman, Keith L. and Katherine Sachs Associate Professor of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania, the exhibit presents painted works by Huguette Caland, a Maronite Lebanese artist whose life and career traversed decades, continents, and media, defying both aesthetic and social conventions of her time and place. Bringing together a significant corpus of works that have rarely been seen together, the exhibition focuses on the body of work that Caland produced while living in Paris in the 1970s, the Bribes de Corps [“Body Parts”] and constitutes the largest presentation of the series to date.
Celebrated for its bold use of color, fluidity of line, and irreducible sensuality, Caland’s work has, especially over the last decade, begun to receive the attention that it has long deserved from museums and galleries around the world. Having made appearances in several Venice Biennales, including the most recent, and in major exhibitions, her works now stand in major collections, including The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA); Musée national d’art moderne, Paris; The Metropolitan Museum of Art; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA); The Sharjah Art Foundation, The Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; and Tate Modern, amongst others.
More about Huguette Caland’s body of work can be found through her website:

During the tour, Huguette’s grandson and SCA member Guy-Karim Caland Puymartin will share his memories of Huguette and perspectives on her art. Born in Paris, Guy immigrated to the U.S. alongside his family a few years after his grandmother settled in Venice, California. Growing up one block away from her home and studio, Guy would spend afternoons with Huguette as she brought lines and shapes into her canvases. He also visited Huguette regularly in her final years after she moved back to Beirut. Guy's studies in math and economics initially took him down a career in healthcare analytics, but he is drawn back to the art world as a patron and collector alongside his fiancée Maria Christina, while supporting his grandmother's artistic legacy.
Following the tour, light refreshments and food will be served at the Arts Club Drawing Room. Complimentary to SCA members and their guests.
You must be a Patron or Benefactor member in good standing to attend this complimentary event.
